FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
|
|
What
is Spinal Decompression Therapy? |
|
Spinal decompression
therapy has been cleared by the FDA for treatment of pain
caused by herniated or bulging discs. Spinal decompression
is a non-surgical, drug free therapy for the relief of back,
neck, leg, and arm pain. The decompression
procedure works by using a computerized traction table to
gently stretch your back. The stretch/traction creates a
negative pressure inside the discs of the spine which is
called decompression. This
negative pressure creates a vacuum effect that helps to
allow protruded or herniated disc material to be pulled
back into proper position, thereby relieving pain and
promoting healing of the spinal discs and soft tissues in the
area. In many cases even severe Spinal Stenosis,
Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD), and Arthritis have had
tremendous relief.
|
|
What makes spinal decompression
therapy so effective?
|
Doctor
skill combined with the table and computerized traction head
are the keys. Proper assessment, correct
positioning and the use of preprogrammed patterns of
distraction and relaxation may reduce disc pressure allowing
necessary nutrients to enliven and accelerate disc
healing. |
|
Who can benefit from spinal decompression
therapy?
|
|
|
Anyone
who has chronic or acute low back pain or neck pain
caused by herniated or bulged discs, degenerative
disc disease, degenerative joint disease, posterior
facet syndrome, arm or leg pain, "sciatica," lateral
canal spinal stenosis, and even failed surgery, can
benefit from spinal decompression therapy.
If you have neck pain and are not sure
what is causing it and want to know if spinal decompression
therapy can help, please call our office at

Are there medical studies which
document the effectiveness of spinal decompression?
|
| Yes! One MRI study documented
up to 90% reduction of disc herniations in 10
of 14 cases and other studies reported that the
majority of herniated disc patients achieved "good" to
"excellent" results after spinal decompression
therapy.
Click
here if you would like to review the studies
yourself. "To Your Health" magazine featured an
article that discusses the safety and effectiveness of
this non-surgical treatment for spinal disc herniations.

Which spinal decompression
system is used?
|
We use the 3D Active
Trac system manufactured by The Saunders Group. The 3D
ActiveTrac is the smoothest performing, most advanced
traction/decompression
and mobilization table ever made.
Its all-in-one
design and state-of-the-art features gives you the
widest range of therapeutic techniques for treatment,
and allows the old rope and pulley system used by
most decompression tables today to now be a thing
of the past.
Designed by H. Duane
Saunders, the 3D ActiveTrac is a revolutionary
breakthrough in clinical treatment. The 3D ActiveTrac
table adjusts in flexion/extension, side bending and
rotation. This allows the clinician to accommodate
painful postural deformities that are difficult to treat
with other decompression
systems.

What other therapies
are provided along with the Spinal Decompression Therapy?
|
|
In
addition to Spinal Decompression Therapy,
prescribed therapies often called physical
therapy by Physical Therapists or physiotherapy
by Doctors of Chiropractic may include gentle
chiropractic manipulation, oxygen therapy
and other Passive Therapies - often considered
temporary relief. These Passive Therapies
included muscle stimulation, ultrasound,
cold laser therapy and massage/myofascial
release to help reduce swelling and pain
levels and relax tight muscles. This
allows for a more gentle and thorough Spinal
Decompression treatment and allows the healing
process to begin in the early weeks of care.
For optimum
results, an Active Therapy Program may also
be prescribed when tolerated and usually
consists of gentle low impact strengthening,
stabilizing and coordination rehabilitation
while in the office. Each individual program is
customized by Dr. Elliott
to fit the individual needs and ability of
each patient. |
|
 |
Home care
and Nutrition can also play a strong role in patient
recovery, and may also be prescribed to shorten recovery
times and minimize a potential for flare-up episodes.
This gives the patient the ability and confidence
to continue to strengthen and stabilize their spine
and personally manage their condition long after
their Spinal Decompression Program is completed for
long lasting results.
Due to Dr.
Elliott's strong background
and training in spine and posture rehabilitation and
his certification and experience as both a Spinal
Decompression
Therapy Practitioner and a registered American
Chiropractic Association Rehabilitation Board, Level
1 Rehabilitation Facility (1998), he is able
to deliver the most comprehensive and
unprecedented program available for patients
seeking long term solutions and or surgical
alternatives. |
As a supplement
to spinal decompression treatment, we offer the latest
Cold Laser Therapy for pain and healing using the FDA
cleared TerraQuant Pro
Laser.
 |
|
The goal of laser
therapy is to deliver light energy units from
infrared laser radiation, called photons, to
damaged cells. The consensus of experts is that
photons absorbed by the cells through laser
therapy stimulate the mitochondria to accelerate
production of ATP. This biochemical
increase in cell energy is used to transform live cells
from a state of illness to a stable, healthy
state.
|
What is Laser or Light
Therapy?
Low
level laser & LED
Therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red
and near infrared) to create therapeutic effects.
These effects include improved healing time, pain
reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.
The light may be provided by a low power laser or
an LED (light emitting diode). |
|
|
 |
Lasers emit energy in a form
of photons; these particles of energy are absorbed by the
cells and tissue resulting in conversion of light into
biochemical energy. Multiple physiological responses are
thereby initiated and normal cell function is restored.
This process is curative and eliminates symptoms (i.e.
pain, edema etc.)
Research Demonstrates
that injuries
treated with laser therapy heal faster due to the
strengthening effect the therapy has on tissues, and the
improvement in blood flow and lymphatic drainage, and that
immune response is improved. Laser therapy is
pain free, non-invasive, has no known side effects, is
FDA-cleared, and has proven clinical results. Over 3000
clinical studies have been published worldwide that attest to
the effectiveness of laser therapy.
